KMU Appeal to support the victims of recent floods in the Philippines?

7 August 2012

Dear friends,

The Philippines is being battered by continuous rains for two weeks now.
The rains, caused by Typhoon Gener last week and by the Southwest monsoon
now, have caused massive flooding in many parts of the country,
particularly in Luzon islands.

In many areas, entire houses have been submerged in water. Many residents
were not able to save their properties, store food, and keep dry clothes.
Many of the areas affected by the floods are urban poor and workers?
communities which are home to many members of KMU unions and mass
organizations.

As of today, at least 9,742 families were affected by floods in several
parts of the National Capital Region. (See below an initial list of
affected areas and families.) We are still gathering data from our chapters
in Central Luzon, Northern Luzon and Southern Tagalog regions on the extent
of damage in their communities.

This afternoon, Task Force Obrero, of which KMU is a member, had its
initial drive of gathering relief goods for the victims of massive floods.
The group, composed of volunteers from KMU, Anakpawis Partylist and Piston,
went to several areas in Project 3 in Quezon City. It was able to gather a
significant number of clothes, canned goods, coffee, milk, and other relief
goods in a matter of few hours.

The goods will be distributed tomorrow morning in Marikina City and Bagong
Silangan, Quezon City. These are some of the areas worst-hit by the
flooding. We are also preparing a feeding program as many of the evacuees
are getting hungry in the evacuation sites.

We kindly ask the support of our friends in the international community in
our efforts to provide immediate relief to thousands of victims of this
recent calamity. While we appreciate material goods, we highly encourage
you to send financial support which we can use for our rehabilitation
efforts.
